Before French Revolution there were two class - privilege and non privileged class. Of them the privilege class people constituted the first estate and second estate. The first estate class constituted the clergy. The clergy were again divided into higher and lower class.

They were not bound to pay any tax. The lower class constituted the lower class.

The second estate there were 2 parts - nobility of sword and professional nobility. The first group carried swords to express their dignity.
