Two processes by which nitrogen in the atmosphere is made available in the soil for plant use:

There are some processes by which the atmospheric nitrogen is available in the soil for the use of the plant.

  • Nitrogen fixing bacteria can convert the atmospheric nitrogen N_{2} into the ammonium ion or NH_{4} -  which will be present in the soil for the use of the plants. Legumes which is very much acceptable by the farmers to grow the nitrogen fixing bacteria in the nodules in their roots.
  • Lightening can convert the atmospheric nitrogen to the ammonia and nitrate salt that can present in the soil.
