Two radio frequency point sources
separated by 2.0 mare radiating in
phase with a = 0.50m. A detector
moves in a circular path around the
two sources in a plane containing
them. How many maxima it detects?
Do the problem by minimum
calculations.

Condition for maxima is

d sin\theta = n \lambda

sin \theta = \dfrac {n \lambda}{d} = n(\dfrac{0.5}{2}) = 0.25n

1 \geq 0.25

Thus there are 16 different angels in all and therefore 16 maxima.

  • values are -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, +3, +4. For each of these there are 2 different values of q except for -4 and +4.
  • A single value of q, −90∘ and +90∘, is associated with n=−4 and n=+4 respectively.
