Please consider that amphoteric behaviour is of dual type,

with acid it behaves chemically as a base

while with base it will behave chemically as an acid .

inorder to ascertain both one has to use two reagents i.e.an acid as well as base .

e.g. ZnO + 2HCl → ZnCl2 +H2O.

ZnO +2 NaOH → Na2ZnO2 +H2O.
