Based on the occurrence, Earthquakes are of two types as follows:
1.TECTONIC EARTHQUAKES: Most of the earthquakes are of this sort. So how does it actually occur?!
Our Earth's Crust is made of several pieces just like a jigsaw puzzle. These pieces called "Tectonic plates" slowly move away from each other, colliding with each other, or sliding past one another, thereby causing immense stress to build up between the plates. According to the Elastic Rebound Theory, rocks behave like elastic masses. So, initially the rock plates respond by bending and when the elastic limit is attained ,rupture develops along with displacements of blocks along the fault plane(plane of rupture). When the elastic energy that was stored during stressing is released, massive vibrations move outward from the fault in all directions exactly like ripples in a pond!
2.NON-TECTONIC EARTHQUAKES: These may occur due to volcanic eruptions, atomic explosions ,landslides and subsidence.
