Given :

Two resistances

  • R₁ = (100 ± 3) Ω
  • R₂ = (200 ± 4) Ω

are connected in series.

To Find :

Equivalent resistance and percentage error in the measurement.

Solution :

❖ The equivalent resistance of series combination is

➙ R = R₁ + R₂

➙ R = 100 + 200

R = 300 Ω

The error in equivalent resistance is given by

➙ ∆R = ∆R₁ + ∆R₂

➙ ∆R = 3 + 4

∆R = 7 Ω

Percentage error in measurement of resistance is given by

➙ % Error = ∆R/R × 100

➙ % Error = 7/300 × 100

➙ % Error = 7/3

% Error = 2.33%

Knowledge BoosteR :

  • Least count errors are random errors but within a limited size; they occur with both random and systematic errors.
  • In all mathematical operations, the errors are of addictive nature.
