Given,

Resistances of two resistors connected in parallel combination = 4 ohms and 6 ohms

Voltage supply across the circuit = 6V

To find,

a) The current through the battery

b) Current flowing through each resistor

Solution,

We can simply solve this numerical problem by using the following process:

Let us assume that the equivalent resistance of the circuit is R ohms.

As per ohms law,

"For a voltage V across the conductor, current I flowing through the conductor and resistance R provided by the conductor to the flow of current, V = RI "

{Statement-1}

Mathematically,

If a set of resistors are arranged in a parallel type of arrangement, then the reciprocal of the equivalent resistance of the arrangement is equal to the sum of the reciprocals of the individual resistances.

The total voltage supply across all the resistors, arranged in parallel type, is equal.

{Statement-2}

Now, according to the question;

1/R = 1/4 + 1/6

=> 1/R = (3+2)/12 = 5/12

=> R = 12/5 ohms

Now, according to the statement-1;

The current through the battery

= total current through the circuit

= voltage supply/equivalent resistance

= 6V/(12/5)ohms

= 2.5 A

Now, according to the statement-2;

Voltage supply across each of the two parallelly arranged resistors = 6V

Now, the total current flowing through the 4 ohms resistor

= voltage supply/resistance

= 6V/4ohms = 1.5 A

And, the total current flowing through the 6 ohms resistor

= voltage supply/resistance

= 6V/6ohms = 1 A

Hence, the total current through the battery is equal to 2.5 A, the total current flowing through the 4 ohms is equal to 1.5 A, and the total current flowing through the 6 ohms is equal to 1 A, respectively.
