Two roads, each 3 m wide, run at right angles
through the centre of a rectangular park 72 m
by 56 m, such that each is parallel to one of the sides of the rectangle. Find the area of the
remaining portion of the park. Also, find the cost of gravelling these paths at 79.50 per sq m.

Answer: 236 m²

Step-by-step explanation: Area of first crossroad which is rectangular =

                                                                                                                 l × b

Hence area = 72m × 2m= 144 m²

Area of 2nd crossroad which is rectangular = 48m× 2m

= 96 m²

Area of middle part which is square =2m×2m

= 4m^2

Area of crossroads= (144+96) m² - 4 m²

=240 m² - 4 m²= 236 m²
