Two rods of same metal and of same cross-section
have lengths 0.5 m and 0.8 m. The temperature
difference across the ends of the first rod is 40°C. Find
the temperature difference across the second rod, if
the rate of heat conduction is equal in both the rods.

If the rate of heat conduction is equal in both the rods then temperature difference across the second rod is 227.8 °C.

Given-

  • Rods are formed of same metal.
  • Cross sectional area of the rod is same.
  • Length of first rod = 0.5 m
  • Length of second rod = 0.8 m
  • Temperature difference across the ends of first rod = 40 °C

We know that Rate of heat conduction is the ratio of temperature difference to the resistance.

Q = ΔT / R

and R = L/KA

So, Q = ΔT × K × A/ L

K, A and Q is same as given in the question.

So,

ΔT₁/L₁ = ΔT₂/L₂

By substituting the value we get

313/0.5 = ΔT₂/0.8

ΔT₂ = 500.8 Kelvin

ΔT₂ = 227.8 °C
