two rods of zinc and copper are placed in copper sulphate solution and a Steady Current was passed through a solution for sometime

a) what is the name given to this process and what will you observe after sometime

b) name the anode, cathode and electrolyte used in the process

c) what can you add to copper sulphate solution to make it more conductive ?

Answer:

a)The name of the process will be electrolysis.

we will see the coating of zinc over copper(cathode) and gas evolution in anode.

b) Anode is zinc, cathode is copper and electrolyte is copper sulphate solution.

hope it helps u..

Answer:

a) Name of the prosses is electrolysis.

b) Zinc is anode, copper is cathode and copper sulphate solution is electrolyte

c) For conduction of electricity ions are needed in solution and free electrons are needed in conductors.

Incase of solid copper sulphate solution, it's just a crystalised salt with 5 molecules of water. It does not have moblie or free electrons in its lattice structure to conduct electricity as in the case of other ionic comppunds ex. NaCl too.

But when dissolved in water , it gets dissociated into Cu 2+ and S04 2- ions (water dissolves nearly all ionic compounds due to its high dielectric constant).

Now , if a potential difference is applied across the electrodes dipped in the solution , the ions participate in the conduction of electricity inside the solution while the electrons contribute in conduction in the external circuit to maintain a cycle until all of the copper gets deposited on cathode (negative electrode) if cathode is inert or non-reacting

Hope it helps u!
