Two sides of an isosceles triangle are 18cm and 7cm.What is the measure of the third side? Write your answer with proper justification.

If the third side is assumed to be 3

the the cos of the angle opposite the side of size 7 is given by

cos C = [a^2+b^2-c^2]/[2ab]

cos C = [3^2+3^2 -7^2][2(3)(3_] = -31/18

31/18>1 but cos C =1 when a maximum

The required side must be 7
