Given : Two small diameter 10gm dielectric balls can slide freely on a vertical channel . Each carry a negative charge of 1μC.

To find : The seperation between the balls if the lower ball is restrained from moving.

solution : here weight of upper ball is balanced by electrostatic force as shown in figure.

i.e., electrostatic force = weight of upper ball

⇒ kq²/r² = mg

⇒r² = kq²/mg

here k = 9 × 10^9 Nm²/C², q = 10¯⁶ C , m = 10¯² kg and g = 10 m/s²

⇒r² = {9 × 10^9 × (10¯⁶)²}/(10¯² × 10)

⇒r² = (9 × 10¯²) = 0.09

⇒r = 0.3 metre

Therefore the seperation between the balls is 0.3 m
