Explanation:
Given Two smooth cylinders, each of weight W=1000 N and radius 15 cm, are connected at their centres by a string AB of length 40 cm; and rest up on a horizontal plane, supporting above them a third cylinder of weight 2000 N and radius 15 cm as shown in the figure. Find the force S in the string AB and the pressure produced on the floor at the points of contact D and E.
- Given So there are two smooth cylinders
- So weight of two cylinders are 1000 N
- Also Radius of each cylinder = 15 cm
- Length of string AB = 40 cm
- So from triangle inside the 3 circles will be PQR
- So in triangle PQR we have M and N are midpoints of PQ and QR and O is the midpoint of base PR
- PQ = PM + MQ
- = 15 + 15
- = 30 cm
- So from triangle PQO we have
- Sin theta = PO / PQ
- = 20 / 30
- = 2/3
- = 0.666
- So theta = sin^-1 0.667
- = 41.75 degree
