Explanation:

Given Two smooth cylinders, each of weight W=1000 N and radius 15 cm, are connected at their centres by a string AB of length 40 cm; and rest up on a horizontal plane, supporting above them a third cylinder of weight 2000 N and radius 15 cm as shown in the figure. Find the force S in the string AB and the pressure produced on the floor at the points of contact D and E.

  • Given So there are two smooth cylinders
  • So weight of two cylinders are 1000 N
  • Also Radius of each cylinder = 15 cm
  • Length of string AB = 40 cm
  • So from triangle inside the 3 circles will be PQR
  • So in triangle PQR we have M and N are midpoints of PQ and QR and O is the midpoint of base PR
  •        PQ = PM + MQ
  •             = 15 + 15
  •              = 30 cm
  •  So from triangle PQO we have
  •       Sin theta = PO / PQ
  •                     = 20 / 30
  •                     = 2/3
  •                     = 0.666
  •    So theta = sin^-1 0.667
  •                 = 41.75 degree
