Which solid is likely to float and why?
Answers
GiveN :-
- Two solids A and B have a density of 2.5 g/cm³ and 0.80 g/cm³ .
- They are placed in a liquid of density 1.2 g/cm³ .
To FinD :-
- Which solid is likely to float and why .
SolutioN :-
Let us say we have a solid of density a and it is placed in a liquid of density b . If we place it in that liquid then there are three possibilities .
When the density of solid is greater than the density of liquid , that is a > b . Then in such case the solid will sink in water .
When the density of solid is equal to the density of the liquid . That is a = b . Then in such case the solid will float in the liquid while being submerged in the liquid .
When the density of solid is less than the density of liquid , that is a < b . Then in such case the solid will float in water .
Here of the two solids A and B we see that the density of Solid A is greater than the density of liquid . So it will sink in water .
Again , we see that the density of Solid B is less than the density of liquid . Therefore it will float in the liquid .
