Two solutions of different concentrations of acid are mixed creating 40 mL of a solution that is 32% acid. One-quarter of the solution is made up of a 20% acid solution. The remaining three-quarters is made up of a solution of unknown concentration, c. Which equation can be used to determine c, the unknown concentration? 30c + 10(0.2) = 40(0.32) (c) + (0.2) = 40(0.32) (c)( (0.2)) = 40(0.32) 30(c)(10(0.2)) = 40(0.32)

Given : Two solutions of different concentrations of acid are mixed creating 40 mL of a solution that is 32% acid.

One-quarter of the solution is made up of a 20% acid solution

The remaining three-quarters is made up of a solution of unknown concentration, c

To Find : Which equation can be used to determine c, the unknown concentration?

30c + 10(0.2) = 40(0.32)

(c) + (0.2) = 40(0.32)

(c)( (0.2)) = 40(0.32)

30(c)(10(0.2)) = 40(0.32)

Solution:

40 mL of a solution    with 32% acid

one Quarter = 10 ml   with  20% acid.

three Quarter = 30 ml with  unknown c

Equating acid

10( 20 /100)  + 30(c)  = 40(32/100)

=> 10(0.2) + 30c  = 40(0.32)

=> 30c + 10(0.2) = 40(0.32)

30c + 10(0.2) = 40(0.32) is the correct Equation which can be used to determine c,

on solving c = 0.36  hence 36% concentration
