Two sound waves having wavelengths of 87 cm and 88.5cm respectively, when superimposed, produce 10 beats per second. Find the velocity of sound (Ans : 513.3 m/s)

Given :

λ1 = 87 cm = 0.87 m,  

λ2 = 88.5 cm = 0.885 m

Beat frequency, N = 10 beats per second

: v1 = n1/ λ1 and v2 = n2/ λ2

∴ n1 = v /λ1 and n2 = v/ λ2

∵ λ2 > λ1 hence n1 > n2  

∴ N = n1 – n2 = v/ λ1 – v /λ2  

= v[ 1/0.87 – 1/0.885]

10=v[[ 1/0.87 – 1/0.885]

10=v[0.885-0.87/0.87x0.885]

V=10xx0.87x0.885/0.015

V=513.3m/s

∴Veloccity of sound=513.3m/s
