Given:

Two sphere of mass 2kg and 3kg have there centre 50cm apart find the centre.

To find:

Centre of mass of system ?

Calculation:

Let's assume that the spheres have been placed in coordinate system as follows:

  • 2 kg at origin (0,0)
  • 3 kg at (50,0)

Now, let centre of mass be \bar{x}:

 \bar{x} =  \dfrac{ \sum(m_{i} x_{i} )}{ \sum( m_{i}) }

 \implies \bar{x} =  \dfrac{ (2 \times 0) + (3 \times 50)}{ 2 + 3 }

 \implies \bar{x} =  \dfrac{150}{ 5 }

 \implies \bar{x} =  30 \: cm

So, centre of mass is at coordinates (30,0) , i.e. 30 cm from 2 kg and (50-30) = 20 cm from 3 kg.
