Two spheres of same metal weigh 1 kg and 7 kg. The radius of the smaller sphere is 3 cm. The two spheres are melted to form a single big sphere. Find the diameter of the new sphere

Answer:

M = d V   where d is the density of the metal

M1 = 1 kg    M2 = 7 kg     M3 = M1 + M2 = 8 kg

M = 4/3 pi R^3 d

M3 / M1 = R3^3 / R1^3      since the density doesn't change

R3^3 / R1^3 = M3 / M1 = 8

R3 = 2 R1      solving the above equation for R3

So R3 = 2 * 3 cm = 6 cm

and D3 = 12 cm     the diameter of the combined spheres
