Two strings support a load of weight 7.5 N, as shown in Fig. 1.1

One string has a tension T1 and is at an angle 50° to the horizontal. The other string has a tension T2 and is at an angle 40° to the horizontal.

The object is in equilibrium. Determine the values of T1 and T2 by using a vector triangle or by resolving forces.

Given:-

force= 7.5

theta 1= 50

theta 2= 40

To find:-

T1 and T2

Solution:-

Resolve the components horizontally in the above figure.

horizontally:- 7.5 cos 40° / 7.5 sin 50°

Now, lets resolve all the forces vertically.

vertically:- 7.5 sin 40° / 7.5 cos 50° = 4.8(2) N

Now according to the figure and statement,two strings support a load of weight 7.5 N. One string has a tension T1 and is at an angle 50° to the horizontal. The other string has  a tension T2 and is at an angle 40° to the horizontal. That means the object is in equilibrium. Now to find the values of T1 and T2 use method of vector triangle or by resolving forces.

T2 cos 40° = T1 cos 50°

T1 sin 50° + T2 sin 40° = 7.5

T1 = 5.7(45)

T2 = 4.8 (N)

The values of T1 and T2 are T1 = 5.7(45)  and T2 = 4.8 (N) repectively.
