Answer: The length of a wave ( wavelength) can be measured from the beginning to the end as shown in the sketch shown here. ( it is represented by a sinusodal wave, i .e similar to a sine wave) . The waves are alternated between a crest and a trough, the wave length being the length between a crest to the next crest , OR between a trough and the next trough. Since the crest and trough are alternated, the length between a crest and the adjoining trough will be only half the wave length. Accordingly, the wave length will be 40 cm.
