Let time taken by smaller tap be x and bigger tap be y.

x + y =3 1/13 =40/3...... Eq ( 1)

X=y+3

x-y=3.......(2)

adding 1 and2

2x+40/3+3

X=40+9/3

x= 49/3×2=49/6

.

Put x=49/6 in eq(2)

.

49/6-y=3

y= 49/6= 49-18/6 = 31/6

.

The smaller and bigger taps take 49/6 & 31/6 mins to fill the tank completely.
