Given,

The charge of the first taxi = $3 per mile

The charge of the second taxi = $1.77 per kilometre

Total distance of the journey = 12 miles

To find,

The taxi which will be costlier to complete the journey.

Solution,

First of all, latest calculate the total cost taken by the first taxi because this is compatible easier calculation.

First taxi cost :

1 mile cost = $3

12 miles cost = 3×12 = $36

For, calculate the total cost taken by the second taxi we need to convert the total distance into miles unit.

Total distance = 12 miles = 1.609 × 12 = 19.31 kilometres (approx.)

[ Term of unit conversion = 1 mile = 1.609 kilometres.]

Second taxi cost :

1 kilometre cost = $1.77

19.31 kilometres cost = 1.77 × 19.31 = $34.17

Hence, the first taxi will cost $36 and the second taxi will cost around $34.17
