Let the number be = y
Two third of y =2y/3
Three fourth of y = 3y/4
The difference is 3
Therefore,

3y/4-2y/3=3
=> 9y-8y/12=3
=> y/12=3
=> y=3x12
=> y=36

The required number is 36.

Given:

two third of a number is three less than three fourth of the number.

To find:

The required number

Solution:

Let the required number be x.

  • Two third of x is, \frac{2}{3} x .
  • Three fourth of x is, \frac{3}{4} x .
  • The difference between the above two is 3.

As two third of a number is three less than three fourth of the number

Mathematically we can write it as,

\frac{3}{4}x -\frac{2}{3}x =3

(\frac{3}{4} -\frac{2}{3} )x=3

(\frac{9-8}{12})x =3

\frac{1}{12} x=3

x=36

Hence, the required number is 36.
