Given info : Two toy trains a and b run towards each other on a conveyor belt of lenght 2500m.the speed of train a is 35m/s and speed of train b is 15m/s.

To find : What is the time taken by trains to collide if the speed of the conveyer belt is 10m/s.

solution : speed of train a = 35 m/s

so velocity of train a with respect to conveyor belt, v₁ = 35 - 10 = 25 m/s

similarly, speed of train b = 15 m/s

so velocity of train b with respect to conveyor belt, v₂ = -15 - 10 = -25 m/s

[ as second is in opposite direction of first train so if I use positive sign for 1st train, then it will be negative for 2nd train ]

now time taken by trains to collide = distance between trains/relative velocity

= 2500/{25 - (-25)}

= 2500/50

= 50 sec

Therefore the time taken by trains to collide is 50 sec.
