New Delhi, 17 Sept. : A serious train accident took place in the early hours of 16th September when the Punjab Mail and Delhi Express ran into each other in a head of collision near Panipat. It appears an error in operating the signals led to the two trains to run in the same track. The dense fog added to the problem rendering the signal lights almost obscure. Two engines and 6 compartments of both the train have been completely damaged. The traffic accident led to the loss of many lives. Unconfirmed report says atleast 42 people lost their lives and 125 were injured. The rescue work has been undertaken by the local people, police and the railway men.
Railways have declared compensation to the families of the dead persons and to the injured ones. An enquiry has also been odered.
