Answer:The velocity of train a and b is 3.75 m/s and 1.25 m/s.

Explanation:

Given that,

Length of each train = 50 m

Total distance = 100 m

Time of train a = 40 sec

Time of train b= 20 sec

Let us considered speed of train a is v and speed of train b is v'.

When train a overtakes the b then the relative velocity of a with respect to b is v-v'.

v-v'= \dfrac{100}{40}= 2.5 m/s.....(I)

When train a crosses the train b then the relative velocity of a with respect to b is v+v'

v+v'=\dfrac{100}{20}= 5 m/s....(II)

From equation (I) and (II)

v-v' = 2.5

v+v' = 5

After solving,

v= 3.75 m/s

Put the value of v in equation (I)

3.75 -v'= 2.5

v' = 1.25 m/s

Hence, The velocity of train a and b is 3.75 m/s and 1.25 m/s.
