Given that,

Length of train 1 is 275 m and length of train 2 is 320 m. Speed of first train is 38 km/h and that of train 2 is 34 km/h.

To find,

The time taken to cross each other.

Solution,

Two trains are running in opposite direction. Their relative velocity is calculated as :

v = 38 km/h + 34 km/h

v = 72 km/h

or

v = 20 m/s

Total distance = length of train 1 + length of train 2

D = 275 m + 320 m

D = 595 m

Let t is the time when they cross each other. So,

t=\dfrac{d}{v}\\\\t=\dfrac{595\ m}{72\ m/s}\\\\t=8.26\ s

So, it take 8.26 seconds to cross each other.

Time and speed

Step-by-step explanation:

  • Here the length of train 1 is given 275 m
  • Train 2 = 320 m
  • speed of 1st train is = 38km/h
  • speed of 2nd train is = 34km/h
  • Both trains cross each other in opposite direction. The relative velocity has been calculated.
  • V  of both  train is = 38 +34 km/h
  • Total velocity is  = 72 km/h  or 20m/s
  • Distance in both train is D = 275 +320 m
  • Total D is equal to = D = 595 m
  • Now time when each crossed one another is 20m.s
  • t = d/v
  • t = 595/ 72
  • t = 8.26 m/s
