Given,

Forces of magnitude 5k N and 10k N act 45 cm or 0.45 m apart.

the direction of the 5k N force is reversed.

To find,

The shift in the position of the resultant force when 5k N force is reversed.

Solution,

Initially let the position where the resultant force acts be x_i m away from 10k N force, so the point is 0.45 - x_i m away from 5k N force.

Applying the formula, Torque = force × distance

10k (x_i ) = 5k (0.45 -x_i )

⇒ 2 x_i = 0.45 - x_i

x_i = 0.15 m

When the 5k N force is reversed, let the resultant force act on a point x_f away from the 10k N force,  so the point is 0.45 + x_f m away from the 5k N force.

⇒ 10k (x_f) = 5k (0.45 + x_f)

⇒  2 x_f = 0.45 + x_f

x_f = 0.45 m

The shift = x_f -  x_i= 0.3 m

∴ The shift in the position where the resultant acts when the 5k N force is reversed is 0.3 m or 30 cm.
