Given,

Two unlike parallel forces of 20 N apart act on a rod at 2m apart from each other.

To find,

Distance between two unlike parallel forces of 10 N to nullify the effect of the previous forces.

Solution,

When the two parallel forces are applied to the rod, torque is produced.

Since the forces are parallel and equal in magnitude,

τ = force × distance between forces

⇒τ_{1} = 20 × 2 = 40

now,

let the distance between 2nd couple of parallel forces be x.

⇒ τ_{2} = 10 × x

To nullify the effect,

τ_{1} = τ_{2}

⇒10 × x = 40

x = 40m

∴ The distance between the two unlike parallel forces of 10 N to nullify the effect will be  x = 40m.
