Let cost price of first variety of rice =

x

per kg

cost price of second variety of rice =

(

x

+

7

)

per kg

Let cost price of the mixture per kg = y

Using rule of alligation

x (x + 7)

\ /

y

/ \

(x + 7 - y) (y - x)

(x+7-y) : (y-x) = 3 : 4

4(x+7-y) = 3(y-x)

4x + 28 - 4y = 3y - 3x

7y = 7x + 28

y = x + 4

But cost price of 1 kg of mixture =

24

×

100

120

=

20

Therefore x + 4 = 20

Cost of the first variety of rice = Rs.16 per Kg

Two varieties of wheat are mixed in the proportion of

3:4 and the mixture is sold at $28 per kg at a profit

of 40%. If the second variety of wheat costs 3 more

than the first variety of wheat, find the cost price of

the first variety of wheat.
