Two vessels of capacities 1L and 3L containing respectively N, gas at 100 kPa and O, gas at 320
are connected through a valve and the gases are allowed to mix isothermally. Then the final press
of the gas mixture would be:
1) 265kPa
2) 420 kPa
3) 220 kPa
4) 365kPa

Given,

Nitrogen gas at Pressure = 100 Pka, Volume= 1L

Oxygen gas at Pressure = 320 Pka, Volume= 3L

To find,

Final Pressure of the vessel P_{final}

Solution,

We can find out the final pressure of the vessel by applying the Ideal gas equation.

  • The two mixtures are mixed isothermally, which means the temperature before and after remains constant.
  • The ideal gas equation during isothermal mixing is:

         P_{1} V_{1} = P_{2} V_{2}

Applying the above equation,

P_{N} V_{N} + P_{O} V_{O} = P_{final} V_{final},

(V_{final} = 1+3 = 4L) ,

⇒ 100 x 1 + 320 + 3 = P_{final} x 4,

⇒ 100+960=P_{final} x 4,

⇒ 1060 = P_{final} x 4,

P_{final} = \frac{1060}{4} ,

P_{final} = 265 Kpa.

The final pressure when two vessels of capacities 1L and 3L containing respectively, N gas at 100 kPa and O gas at 320 and connected through a valve are mixed isothermally is 265 Kpa. (Option 1)
