Q]

=> a) 306 m/s

Solution:

Beats produced due to two frequencies is given by,

n1 - n2

Where n1 and n2 are the frequencies of two waves

Here, no of beats = 12/s

λ1 = 50cm = 0.50m

λ2 = 51cm = 0.51m

n1 - n2 = 12

or ( v/λ1 ) - ( v/λ2 ) = 12 ...[ n = v/λ ]

or v = [ ( λ2 - λ1 ) / ( λ1 λ2 ) ] - 12

or v = ( 12 λ1 λ2) / ( λ2- λ1 )

∴ v = speed of sound

v = ( 12 × 0.50 × 0.51 ) / ( 0.51 - 0.50 )

v =( 12 × 0.50 × 0.51 ) / 0.01

v = 306 m/s

Thus, speed of sound is 306 m/s !
