Sugar mama and sugar daddies are slang words used to describe an older woman and older man, respectively, who provide gifts and money to younger people in exchange of sex. There are two ways that sugar mamas and sugar daddies contribute to the spread of HIV.

First is power imbalance. The unequal power this kind of relationship makes it difficult for younger one to demand safe sex. The sugar mama and sugar daddy take control of the relationship, thus increasing the risk for the young ones to contract the HIV.

Second is age disparity. The age gap is also a factor why there is a high risk in this kind of relationship. In older to show respect to elders, young people find it hard not to accept advances by older partner. This promotes consensual unprotected sexual relationship.

The term “Sugar daddy” or “Sugar Mommy” is usually used to refer to the elderly man or woman who usually provides gift and money in exchange for sex.

Sugar daddies and mommies can cause to spread HIV because even though the younger partner may demand safe sex, the dominant one would refuse to do so.

Apart from that, the age gap also increases the risk of HIV infection.
