Two wheels have diameters of 12 inches and 18 inches, respectively. Both wheels roll

along parallel straight lines at the same linear speed until the large wheel has

revolved 72 times. At this point, how many times has the small wheel revolved ?

Circumference (distance around the outside of the wheel) = πd (d is diameter)

Circumference of the 12" wheel = πd = 12π, so that is the distance the small wheel travels with one revolution

Circumference of the 18" wheel = πd = 18π, so that is the distance the small wheel travels with one revolution

In 72 revolutions, the 18" wheel has traveled 72 * 18π = 1296π

So that means the 12" wheel has also traveled 1296π, so it has made 1296π/12π revolutions

= 1296/12 revolutions = 108 revolutions
