Explanation:

Given two wire a and b are stretched by same force. if for a and b ya:yb=1:2,ra:rb=3:1 and La:Lb=4:1,then ratio of their extension will be

  • So we have Young’s modulus,
  •                   y = F / a x ΔL x L
  •              So ΔL = F x L / a x Y
  • Also Area is directly proportional to radius.
  •               a α r^2
  • Now ΔLa / Δ Lb = Fa x La / aa x ya x ab x yb / Fb x Lb
  • Force gets nullified. So we get
  •                           = La / Lb x yb / ya x (rb / ra)^2
  •       Substituting the given ratios we get
  •                             = 4/1 x 2/1 x (1/3)^2
  •                              = 4 x 2 x 1/9
  •                             = 8/9
  • So the ratio of their extension ΔLa / ΔLb = 8/9 or 8:9
