Two wires made of copper and nichrome have equal lengths and equal resistances. Which is thicker? The resistivity of nichrome is greater than resistivity of copper. Why are alloys commonly used in electrical heating devices such as electric toasters and electric iron ?

Nichrome has more resistivity than copper. Hence for equal length and resistance it has to to be thicker since resistance is inversely proportional to the diameter of the wire. Nichrome and copper wires of the same length and radius are connected in a series. A current, I, is passed through them.
