Two wires of same length and material but of different radii are suspended from rigid support both carry the same load at the lower end.Compare the stress ,strain and extension prouduced to given wire?

Wire with more larger radius will have smaller stress, smaller strain and the extension is small in wire of more radius

As we know that stress is defined as ratio of load and crossectional area

so here we will have

Stress = \frac{Load}{Area}

now we will have

stress = \frac{T}{\pi r^2}

so here we can say that the wire with larger crossectional area will have less stress

Now since both the wires are of same material so we can say

strain = \frac{stress}{Y}

here we know that

Y = Young's modulus

so we have

for thick wire the stress will be small and hence the strain will also be small

and we know that

strain = \frac{\Delta L}{L}

so here extension in the wire will be less with more radius
