Given :  Two years ago , a father was five times as old as his son . Two years later , his age will be 8 more than three times the age of the son.

To find :  Father & Son present age

Solution:

present age of father  = x

present age of  son = y

Two years ago father age = x - 2

Two years ago son age = y - 2

Two years ago   father was five times as old as his son

=> x - 2 = 5(y - 2)

=> x   = 5y   - 8

Two years later  father age = x + 2

Two year later son age = y + 2

Two years later father age will be 8 more than three times the age of the son

=> x + 2 = 3(y + 2)  + 8

=> x  = 3y + 12

Equating x

5y   - 8 = 3y + 12

=> 2y = 20

=> y = 10

x = 3y + 12 = 3(10) + 12  = 42

( 42 , 10) represent  present  Father age  and  son age
