Step-by-step explanation:

Let the present age of father be x

And present age of son be y

Case 1:-

Two years ago:-

Age of father = x - 2

Age of son = y - 2

Given, father will be five times as old as his son.

→ x - 2 = 5(y - 2)

→ x - 2 = 5y - 10

→ x - 5y = -10 + 2

→ x - 5y = -8....(i)

Case 2:-

Two years later:-

Age of Father = x + 2

Age of son = y + 2

Father will be 8 more than three times the age of son.

→ x + 2 = 3(y + 2) + 8

→ x + 2 = 3y + 6 + 8

→ x + 2 = 3y + 14

→ x - 3y = 12.....(ii)

Subtracting equation (i) from (ii)

→ x - 3y - (x - 5y) = 12 - (-8)

→ x - 3y - x + 5y = 12 + 8

→ 2y = 20

→ y = 10

Substituting y = 10 in equation (ii)

→ x - 3y = 12

→ x - 3(10) = 12

→ x - 30= 12

→ x = 12 + 30 = 42

Therefore:-

Present age of father = 42 years

Present age of son = 10 years
