Answer:

The Vidhan Sabhas also known as Legislative Assemblies are the lower houses of state legislature in the States of

India. Members of a Vidhan Sabha are direct representatives of the people of the particular State as they are directly

elected by an electorate consisting of all adult citizens of that state. Its maximum size as outlined in the Constitution

of India is not more than 500 members and not less than 60. However, the size of the Vidhan Sabha can be less than

60 members through an Act of Parliament, such is the case in the states of Goa, Sikkim and Mizoram. The Governor

can appoint 1 member to represent the Anglo-Indian community if he/she finds that community to not be adequately

represented in the House. The strengths of the Legislative Assemblies of the States and Union Territories has been

mentioned in Second Schedule of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 amended from time to time and the

special Acts/Rules enacted in respect of the particular State and Union Territories thereafter. Including nominated

member by the Governor, the maximum strength of 404 members State legislative Assembly is of Uttar Pradesh followed by Andhra Pradesh (295) and West Bengal (295), Maharashtra (289), Bihar (243), Tamil Nadu (235),

Madhya Pradesh (231), Karnataka (225), Rajasthan (200), Gujarat (182), Orissa-147, Kerala (141) and Punjab (117).

The strength of State Assembly of Jammu & Kashmir is 111, which is inclusive 24 seats designated for the

territorial constituencies of the state that lies in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir and excluding Provision for the

nomination of two women as members of the Assembly by the Governor, if he is of the opinion that women are not

adequately represented in the Legislative Assembly. The Strengths of Five State Legislative Assemblies are lie

between 68 and 90 and theses are Chhatisgarh (90), Haryana (90), Jharkhand (81), Uttarakhand (70) and Himachal

Pradesh (68). Each of the States of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura has 60 members

in their Assemblies. The States of Goa and Mizoram, each has 40 members in their Assemblies. There are 32

members in the Assembly of Sikkim. Besides, there are 70 members Legislative Assembly of national capital

territory of Delhi. Legislative Assembly of Puducherry consists of 30 members.
