Indian Mutiny, also called Sepoy Mutiny or First War of Independence, widespread but unsuccessful rebellion against British rule in India in 1857–59. Begun in Meerut by Indian troops (sepoys) in the service of the British East India Company, it spread to Delhi, Agra, Kanpur, and Lucknow.

But this mutiny failed because
Indians had no good weapons
Indians lacked good leaders
There was no unity among Indians
Some indian kings placed British secret
Indian soldiers looted common people so they did not get their support
This revolt surely failed to gain freedom but it made the British to fear about Indians and power
After this event Queen proclaimation was passed in 1858 in which
Governer general was called back and viceroy was appointed
