- The majority of homes in Srinagar had birch-bark roofs that were covered with turf and mud and flowered with lilies and tulips. Turf roofs kept the homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer. False ceilings had Persian-inspired designs and were made of deodar or walnut wood. The wealthy hung painted papier-mache panels as ceilings.
