NCERT based Answer for Class 11 Biology Students
Types of Joints:
1. Fibrous Joint:
Immovable joints
Bones are held together by fibrous connective tissue.
For example: Sutures in skull.
2. Cartilaginous Joint:
Slightly movable joints.
Bones are held together by cartilage.
For example: Joint between ribs and sternum, pubic symphysis, inter vertebral disc.
3. Synovial joints:
Freely movable joints.
There is synovial cavity filled with synovial fluid between the bones.
Types of Synovial Joints:
1. Ball and Socket Joints:
Ball like surface of one bone is fitted into a cup like depression of another bone.
It provides triaxial movement.
Example: Shoulder joint between humerus and pectoral girdle and hip joint between femur and pelvic girdle.
2. Hinge Joint:
Convex surface of one bone fits into concave surface of another bone.
It provides uniaxial movements.
Example: Knee joint and elbow joint.
3. Pivot Joint:
Round or pointed surface of one bone articulates within ring formed by another bone.
It permits uniaxial rotatory movement.
Example: Joint between atlas and axis (2nd) vertebrae.
4. Gliding Joint:
Articulating surfaces of two bones are flat.
It permits biaxial movement.
Example: Joints between carpals and tarsals.
5. Saddle Joint: It is less developed ball and socket type joint.
Example: Joint between carpal and metacarpal of thumb.
