◼Forest referes to a large tract of land covered with trees and accompanying undergrowth of shrubs, herbs and sustaining tbousands of life forms which include both plant and animals.
They depends on climatic conditions, soil types and relief feautres.
There are five major types of forests
i) -Tropical evergreen or rainforest
ii)-Tropical deciduous
iii) -Tropical desert
iv) -Littoral
v) -Montane
◼TROPICAL EVERGREEN OR RAIN FOREST
✳These forests are found in the areas where the annual rainfall is between 25-27 degress and exceeds 77 per cent.
✳They are dense, multi layred and many types of tress and shrubs.
✳Main variety of trees found include rosewood, ebony, mahagony chaplas etc.
DISTRIBUTION
These forests are found in heavy rainfall areas of western slopes of the western ghats, hills of north eastern region and the island group ogmf Lakshadweep, the andaman and nicobar and Tamil nadu coast.
◼TROPICAL DECIDUOUS FOREST
✳The are of two types :-
▶The moist deciduous forest found in areas with annual rainfall 100 cm -200 cm and annual temperature be 24- 27 degrees.
DISTRIBUTION
Found in north eastern part of peninsula, among foothills of Himalayas ans eatern slopes of western ghats.
▶The dry decidous forest found in the areas having a mean annual temperature of 23 - 27 degrees annual rainfall between 70 cm - 100 cm.
DISTRIBUTION
These forests are found over and wide areas specially in an irregular strip running north - south from the foothills of the Himalayas to Kanyakumari except in Rajasthan. The occupy a sizeable area in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
◼TROPICAL DESERT FORESTS
✳They are known as Tropical Thorn forest.
✳They are found in the areas with rainfall less than 50 cm, the mean annual temperature ranges between 25 -27 degrees.
DISTRIBUTION
These forests are distributed in south western Punjab, Haryana Uttar Pradesh, central and eastern Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
◼LITTORAL OR TIDAL FORESTS
✳These are found in the wet marshy areas, in river deltas in or other swampy areas and along sea coasts.
✳The important trees include keora, amur, bhara, rhizophara, screw pines etc.
DISTRIBUTION
These forests are distributed in the deltas of large rivers on the eastern coast and in pockets on the western coast in saline swamps of Sunderbans in West Bengal and coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Oddisa.
◼MONTANE FORESTS
✳The forests are found in the areas where annual temperature is 12-13 degress is between 100 -300 cm .
✳The important trees include mangnolia, laurel, cinchona ,Jamun, plum etc.
DISTRIBUTION
These forests are found in the entire Himaliyan zone from Kashmir to Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. In Peninsular regions they are found in Vindhyas, Nilgris and Western Ghats.
