Any lesion affecting the individual branches (temporal, zygomatic, buccal, mandibular and cervical) is known as a lower motor neuron lesion. Branches of the facial nerve leaving the facialmotor nucleus (FMN) for the muscles do so via both left and right posterior (dorsal) and anterior (ventral) routes.
