Lyman series is obtained when an electron jumps from a higher energy level to a K energy level.

  • In the Lyman series, the electrons transition from a higher energy level (n>1) to the shell of the lowest energy level i.e. the K shell which has the principal quantum number "n" = 1.
  • During the transition of electrons from higher to lower energy state, there is a release of energy in the form of ultraviolet or electromagnetic emission lines.
  • Also, called the emission spectra.
  • Lyman and Balmer series are formed from emission spectra of H atom.
  • In the case of the Balmer series, the excited electron jumps from higher to n = 2 energy level. (L shell)
