let x be the side of larger square

& y be the side of smaller square

from the first condition

x^2+y^2=400

By taking square root both the side

x+y=20 ......(1)

from the second condition

4x-4y=16

divide both the side by 4

x-y=4 .....(2)

equations (1) + (2)

x+y=20

+ x-y=4

----------------

2x=24

x=24/2

x=12

put x=12 in equation (1)

x+y=20

12+y=20

y=20-12

y=8
