In India we must also learn from UAE and adopt disaster situation.
UAE is taking climate change very seriously. It is taking steps to ensure that the nation is able to deal with environmental problems effectively in the future.
The initiatives are:
1. Spreading awareness of sustainability- The national curriculum includes environmental studies to sensitize young children to environmental issues. Further, scholarships are given to those wanting to pursue further courses in environmental studies. Individuals are encouraged to reduce the carbon footprint that they unconsciously leave behind, while going about their daily lives.
2. Reducing greenhouse emissions- This includes steps like taking old polluting products off the market and also promoting the use of public transport by means of introducing metro and light rail.
3. Regular monitoring- The government is monitoring the emission levels regularly. New standards of permissible emission levels are set for vehicles, while electric models are being developed simultaneously.
4. Observance of climate friendly regulations- Climate friendly regulations have been set in place. For instance, the 'Green Building Regulations and specification' and many others, seek to improve the infrastructure of buildings in such a way that lesser resources (like energy used for air conditioning) are consumed.
5. Developing renewable energy sources- The nation is trying to reduce the dependence on fossil and non-renewable energy sources. It is instead, focusing on harnessing wind and solar power. They aim to produce enough solar energy to meet about 40% of the nation’s energy requirements.
6. Minimizing misuse- The country has made electricity more expensive so that people do not misuse or waste electricity.
7. Waste management- Waste management projects have been initiated so that the waste can be reused, especially in terms of water management.
8. Carbon capture- The oil industry is known to use gas flaring as a way of getting rid of excess or waste natural gas. However, this leads to global warming. The government thus has planned ways to reduce oil flaring and also control the amount of carbon that is released into the atmosphere. Thus, carbon capture fights climate change and also provides material (captured carbon) to be used as a resource for other purposes.
UAE has not only pledged to help fight climate change, but has already started working on it too. India definitely has a lot to learn from them.
