Answer:

A board 15 feet long is cut into two pieces such that the length of one piece is two-thirds of the length of the other piece. What is the length of the shorter piece?

Sol:

Let the length of one piece be x

Length of another piece =(2/3) x

Now we have :

x + (2/3) x = 15

Simplifying it ;

~(3x + 2x) ÷3 = 15

~ (5x) ÷3 =15

~ 5x = 45

~ x = 9

So the length of one piece is 9 feet

And that of shorter piece is = (2/3) 9

~~=6 feet

So the length of shorter piece is 6 feet
