let the number a be the given number which is of 2 parts in the ratio 5 : 3

=> total 8 parts

let m be the proportianality const.

=> the parts are 5m and 3m which are assumed to be x  & y respectively.

given that

x = 10 + y

ie., 5x = 10 + 3m

=> 5x - 3m = 10

=> 2m = 10

=> m = 5

=> the 2 parts are 5m = 5(5) = 25

                        &   3m = 2(5) = 15

so, the original number = 8parts

                                       = 8*5

                                       = 40
